Corona Eyebrows

April 4, 2020

After dinner on Wednesday, March 25, I slipped out of the house and made my way to our village.

I was on a clandestine mission. Would anyone see me? Would I return home safely later in the night?

I was a resistance fighter in the war.

A spy in an enemy country.

I was off to buy black market goods. (Someone had toilet paper to sell.)

It was the reformation and I was going to a secret Mass.

A shiver went up my spine as my imagination went wild.

Although my rendezvous wasn’t really illegal, it would be in six hours’ time.

Arriving at my destination, I didn’t enter the building. I’d been told, “Stay in your car. When it’s your turn, I’ll come and get you.”

Soon Kate appeared. A moment later, I was lying on her couch.

“I’m glad I was able to have my eyebrows waxed and hennaed before the new restrictions come into effect,” I said. “I can live without beautiful eyebrows, but I wanted to support you. I heard you’re hoping to do as many appointments as possible tonight.”

Kate nodded and told me that that evening’s work would earn her enough money to pay her outstanding business bills. The next day, because of the coronavirus, she’d be out of work.

For the next few hours, a stream of Kate’s loyal clients slipped through the night to be pampered one last time before all the beauticians had to shut up shop. Who would have thought that getting a facial, a manicure or a set of beautiful eyebrows could be an act of charity?

This current crisis is hard for everyone. My girls have lost their jobs. Kate has lost hers too. Many others are in the same situation. Most businesses have been closed to protect the health of the nation. Because we all want to stay safe, don’t we? We don’t want to encounter the germs.

Actually, I think I’m quite safe at the moment. You see, I have a secret weapon. It will scare any germs away.

I have my corona eyebrows. They’re fierce!

Photo: Last Saturday, my daughter Imogen and I had breakfast together at the lake. Imogen took this phone photo of me and my fierce corona eyebrows. At that time, they were less than 3 days old!
